This mountain scene was done easily with ordinary tissue paper.
Materials: Tissue paper in blues, purples, greens, yellows, browns, and pinks.
Elmer's Glue-All
Foam brushes
Small plates or saucers
Construction Paper
Time: 30 min.
Method: 1) Pour a small puddle of Elmers on each plate. Dilute the Elmers with water so that it becomes easily paintable. You do not need a thick layer of glue to hold the tissue paper, so getting the glue to be just a little thicker than cream will be about right. It isn't critical, though.
2) Tear strips and pieces from the tissue paper. Long strips work best, but even chunky pieces can fit in. Again, none of this is critical.
3) Paint Elmers onto the construction paper. You can cover the whole sheet at one time and touch up as needed.
4) Layer the tissue paper starting from the top with your lightest color. Keep layering the paper as you work downward, using first blues, then purples, then greens or browns. Overlap colors in some places. This will give it depth. The effect should be a mountain scene in the Smokies somewhere.
5) Paint more Elmers on top of the tissue paper any place it is dry. Push it down so it adheres to the construction paper.
TIPS FOR WORKING WITH CHILDREN
They may not have a mountain scene in mind at all. Let them go with their own idea.
Dealing with a group and tissue paper is tricky. I have had both adults and children misunderstand myinstruction to tear strips of paper, and walk off with the last sheet of blue. So, it may be best to pre-tear some of the strips in each color to get started. The only difficulty with this is estimating how much of any color you will need. Remember that whole sheets of tissue paper can be used another day, but strips will get recycled.
